What is this mystical passion and purpose that you speak of?

You may have heard and read many times that finding ‘your’ passion and purpose is the key to a successful business or career….and I agree it is more likely to go the long haul and keep you going through the tough patches if your passion and purpose are aligned to your business.

However, the pressure of ‘finding’ your passion and true purpose can sometimes stop you moving forward at all, in the belief that you have not found what you should be doing so you don’t do anything. You just waiting for the big reveal, waiting for them to turn up one day and knock you off your feet. Unfortunately, it does not work like that, trust me I am speaking from experience.

To have found your purpose in life is truly amazing and those people are lucky however, if you are anything like me it didn’t come quite so easy. For many years I did not know what my purpose was and didn’t really allow myself to explore any passions, as I was so determined to find my ‘true’ passion and purpose that I was stuck. I was putting so much pressure on myself that I was getting in my own way by trying to force it. I now know I was looking in all the wrong places.

First of all, let’s get clear on what passion and purpose is;

Passion - Is driven by emotions, feelings and energy. It brings you joy when you are doing it. We may have many passion’s in life. It is inward looking.

Purpose - is driven by reason, your why, what are you here to put out into the world. Purpose is singular, we don’t have multiple purposes. It is external looking.

Being passionate about something does not mean it is necessarily your purpose in life. For example, I am passionate about travelling and have many times explored working in the travel industry, I even created a website and started blogging about it many years ago but soon realised even though it was my passion it was not my purpose and frizzled out as quickly as it started. I am happy for this to remain a passion.

However, when your passion and purpose do align that is when the magic happens as it fulfils your inner desire and joy as well as and your external output into the world. For example, my passion is to help business owners create a business that aligns to their authentic self. My purpose is to empower business leaders to thrive in their business, so they have the freedom to choose the life they want to lead one coaching session at a time.

The real joy in life comes from finding your true purpose and aligning it with what you do every single day

What can I do to help me find mine?

When you are feeling lost and not sure the direction you need to take, it creates internal panic, the feeling of failure and being left behind when you see people moving forward on their entrepreneurial journey utilising their passions that are aligned with their purpose. You start thinking of time as a scarcity like you are against the clock.

If this is you and you are:

  • Holding off taking any kind of action in case you chose the wrong path

  • Taking all the action you can possibly think of and fit in to 24hrs

  • Don’t know how to start with no obvious path

Let’s just take a minute and STOP, let’s not waste any more time in panic mode, get yourself off the crazy hamster wheel in search of the mysterious passion and purpose. Grab a drink and digest the below to hopefully help you!

#1 – Identify what you love doing

Our passions and purpose are already within us, they are something that just needs uncovering its not something you need to create or make up.

Ask YOURSELF: What do I love doing and what comes easy and start doing those things. Lean into them, practice them, explore them. Be curious, see where it leads.

#2 – Look internally for the answers NOT externally.

You will know what makes you feel good, you know what brings you joy. The deep yearning you have within you, nobody else knows how you feel, no one else can feel those things. I used to constantly bore people with ‘what do you think my passions is’ & ‘what do you think I am good at’ I used to get super frustrated with not being able to see or identify my own purpose.

Allow yourself to listen to your inner guidance and then follow it.

#3 – Its not about the money

I know what you are probably thinking; of course its all about the money, we want to earn more money, charge more money, collect more money!

However, when you are exploring your passions do NOT think along the lines of “I cant monetize this so what’s the point” you don’t know where something is going to lead, it cant come from a place of its only about the money. It has to come from a deeper place that is aligned with your inner purpose, values and worth.

If you choose to do something day in day out just for the money, something that gives you zero satisfaction it very quickly becomes a very unfulfilled life that will drain your energy, positivity and have you seeking more.

#4 – Take intentional action

It is super important to take action to help you with your quest of finding your purpose and feeling more fulfilled. However, rather than taking a scatter gun approach which will have you feeling overwhelmed before you know it, become intentional on what you are doing and the purpose for doing it.

#5 – Align your goals, passion and purpose

Once you have got more clarity on which direction you want to go in, it is imortant to align your goals with your passion and purpose. This will help you move your business down the path closer to your goals.

I hope these tips help you in your quest!

Have a great day!
