How to Harness Energy & Intuition to Create a Thriving Business.
First of all, let's get super clear on what I'm actually talking about. When I'm talking about energy, I'm not talking about the energy that powers your house. I'm talking about the energy that powers you. This is the inner power, this is the inner energy, the good stuff, the stuff that makes you really good at the stuff that powers your mind, body, and soul. This is the stuff where the magic happens.
Intuition is what a lot of people call instinct. Your gut reaction, that feeling that you get, and by using energy and intuition in our business, it can be so powerful. I appreciate not everybody believes or buys into that, but I want to share my thoughts on it, and my experience of it and hopefully give you some food for thought. Even if you are sitting on the sideline, thinking that you’re not really sure what's for you, stick with me. Hear me out and stay curious.
So, how do we go about tapping into our energy and our intuition, in our business? Let's start off by talking about energy. I believe our energy is a precious commodity, and we need to treat it that way. As high-performing business owners, we are hardwired to sit in the energy to keep going and do more. Inevitably we end up thinking that's the way out. We think that's a solution to get to the endpoint, which is natural when you need to do something and you need to get somewhere. Work harder, and keep going. Do more, you'll get there. But in reality, what this is doing is it's depleting our inner energy. We will end up feeling frazzled, we will end up feeling burnt out. We're not sitting in the creative flow state. We sit in that contract, drive, drive, push, push, which isn't healthy, and neither is it creating inspiration. It's not providing us with creative solutions. And fundamentally, it doesn't feel good, it feels hard.
If you've followed me for any length of time you will know I'm all about creating a business that feels aligned, one that feels in flow with what we want to do. Therefore, understanding our energy, how we can tap into it and what gives us energy, and how we can manage it is the foundation of creating a business that we love. If you haven't thought about how you manage your energy, or you thinking goodness that's me, I sit in that push mode, that is a very masculine state to be in. One of “I will just keep going, I will get this done no matter what, I will push through it”.
Whilst in business there is a time for resilience, and persistence, where we do need to keep going. There are also times in our business when we need to take the foot off the gas and step back. Fundamentally, we need to manage our energy. If we don't, we are never going to get anywhere because we’re going to be burned out. In the end, we will be stuck where we are feeling pretty rubbish, right? It's not a great place to be. Let's start by having a look at how we can fill up our energy buckets.
What Drives Energy?
First of all, it is important to understand what gives you energy and equally what drains your energy. Take a look at your business, where you're spending your time, and how the clients you work with make you feel. What makes your business feel easier? Sometimes it’s hard to know what drives energy because we genuinely enjoy our work. We love it. It makes us feel joyful AND we feel fulfilled by what we're doing. We are genuinely happy sitting in this place versus what drains our energy. Anything could drive this feeling, it could be people, it could place it could be projects that you work on.
When we start out in business, there are so many gurus online telling us how we should be doing business. If we just follow this process. If we just do this. If we just follow their five-step process, whatever it is, I just want you to realise that as soon as we start to think we should be doing these things in your business you are by default, disregarding your own energy in exchange for somebody else's, because that might be what brings them joy. It might be what fills their energy. But it might just not work for you. It might just not feel great for you, and that's okay.
It's about taking a step back and doing what makes us feel good. How can I manage my own energy and understand the patterns of how my energy levels work? You might have launched something or you might have done a big project or you might have delivered a speaking gig. Whatever it is remember that once you've poured all your energy into it, you need to refill it because we can't just keep giving our energy and not sending that back up.
Why is Intuition Important?
Let's talk about intuition a little bit more. How can we harness our intuition for our business and create a business that feels good with just one person running it? For me, it’s all about building a business that feels good.
Listen to what your inner-self wants to do. What feels good to you? What feels right for you? Before I started my business, I spent a lot of time in the corporate world knowing that it wasn't right for me. Whilst I had amazing experiences and some amazing opportunities, to the outside world it might have looked like I was successful. However, Inside I had that feeling in my tummy that something was not right for me. I didn’t feel aligned with what I was doing. It felt hard, but we sometimes get brought up being taught that success is hard work. Therefore, it felt right to me, because it felt hard. If I had slowed down and listened to my intuition, it would have saved a lot of heartache for sure because I have a really strong gut instinct and it tends to be right.
When I decided to leave the world of corporate, I made a bit of a promise and a pact to myself that I was going to build my business based on intuition. Every time I decide to do something, every decision I make, every program I launch, I tune in, and I sit with it, and I listen to my intuition. If someone comes along and asks to do a collaboration, if I'm offered an opportunity, I listen. I've said no to so many things, because of my intuition and it's always turned out right. I've said yes to things that I've been teetering on the edge of thinking this might be a great opportunity. I've said yes and then instantly regretted it and thought no this isn't for me and Changed my mind and changed direction and pulled out of things and it's been the absolute right thing for me and my business. Going back to if you are following somebody else's path to success you are by default tuning out your intuition and tuning in to whatever they want you to feel or think or create.
It's no coincidence that things flow easier, when you are aligned to your intuition, and you're managing your inner energy. Things naturally feel easier because you are aligned with your inner power. You're leveraging what you know, feels good for you.
So, how do we do this? This is the hardest because of the noise online and the number of people telling you the things you should be doing. However, fundamentally only you know what feels right to you. A huge part of being a coach and a mentor is helping people figure out what feels good and feels right to them because for so long we have been used to people telling us what we should be doing and how we should be running a business. Yes, there are certain things that have been proven to work better for some people, and all you can do is share that experience and I can share my experience but fundamentally, it's up to you to take the way that feels right for you. If you don’t, the path you follow will not stand the test of time. You're only going to be able to sustain that for so long before you begin to resent your business. Once you start resenting your business you won’t want to show up and your energy will be drained.
Clients will be able to tell that you’ve lost energy and then it becomes a chore, then it becomes a job and no longer a business. You're trying to create something that gives you the freedom, the income, the flexibility, and the opportunity to bring your superpower and your passion to the world and do it in a way that feels really good. Therefore when we create our business, understanding our energy and intuition and allowing ourselves to tune in and harness that is fundamental to the foundations of creating a business that feels good.
So how do we do it, I hear you say. It's really easy, but it's one of those things that no matter how simple it is, it’s also one of the hardest because habits get in the way. limiting beliefs get in the way. We start to doubt ourselves. We start to doubt the trust we have in ourselves. All we need to do is listen. Slow down and listen, trust yourself. Sit with it, and know that you are doing what feels right to you for your business.
You need to understand what fills you with energy. You need to understand the people that fill you with energy, the projects, the kind of clients, all these things that feel good. You want to attract them into your business, you want to sprinkle them through like little fairy dust and magic. Slow down and listen to your intuition.
Doing these two things is going to be the foundation of creating a business that feels good. Every decision in your business is an energetic exchange. If you bring something into your business that's draining your energy, you're gonna feel drained, you are going to dread giving your energy away, versus listening and tapping into your intuition. Bringing in those clients that feel good bringing those projects that you love, is a choice. It's up to you who you work with. Why can't you bring in and create a business that feels good, right? You like doing certain things, how can you create a way to bring more of that in? How can you market to the people you like working with the most? How can you realign your message to get more of these people? You can create anything, this is your business.
I'm not saying shut the doors on everything that doesn't feel good tomorrow because sometimes in the early days of our business we end up working with people that we don't particularly align 100% with to bring in the money. But it’s about asking yourself, do you have control? Is this your decision?
So remember, stop and ask yourself, how am using my energy? Am I slowed down enough to listen to my intuition? Am I listening to that good feeling? When I say listen, I mean stay curious and listen to it. If it doesn't feel right, why does it not feel right? What's the underlying feeling it might be? It might not be the whole project that doesn’t feel right, it might just be a certain element. Or you just feel out of alignment with someone's values. They don't align with yours or you don't like the way that certain things play out. It could be anything. It's about tuning in, slowing down, and listening.
Ask yourself, am I intentionally creating the business that builds me up with energy, and am I listening to my intuition? Go away, think about it. Look at where you spend your time. Look at what makes you feel good, and sprinkle more of that good stuff through your business.
